US History, Civics, and Current Events

Our Citizenship class is unique. It's actually two classes in one.

If you are a permanent resident, planning to take the Naturalization test and Interview, we offer you personalized preparation for the reading, writing and speaking exams. We also help you complete the application -- Form 990. If you need extra practice, we have volunteer tutors to give you one-on-one help. We want you to succeed and become a U.S. citizen.

If you are a long-time resident who has been approved to take the test in Spanish, we have Spanish-speaking teachers to work with you.

In addition, you may participate in a class on U.S. history and government. There, we help you improve your English language skills so that you can follow the news on TV and in the newspapers. We talk about politics and current events in the United States and around the world.

Our Citizenship program meets in the evening, from 6:30 to 9:00pm and is FREE. To participate, you must be able to communicate in English at an intermediate level.

Here are some resources to help you prepare for the test. You can send away for the booklets and flash cards for FREE:

EMAIL US AT to indicate your interest in taking a class, becoming a volunteer, or joining our mailing list ... or to ask any questions. A CentroNYC volunteer will respond promptly.Classes will also be announced on Centro's Meetup page.

Why I volunteer

I love volunteering as an English teacher at Centro, helping students learn the nuances of the language and how it applies in their lives in NYC. Centro allows teachers and students to work together to develop a curriculum that fits the needs of each student. Our low student to teacher ratio ensures that students have enough attention and time to practice English. It is highly gratifying to have our students come to class with stories of how they have used what they learned in class at work or out in NYC.
