Our commitment to volunteering

Centro's all-volunteer structure distinguishes us among New York City's nonprofits. We are a diverse group who share a passion for cultural exchange and community-building. We teach, work in administration and marketing, oversee the day-to-day operations of our classes, and energize and strengthen our community. Veteran volunteers can join our Coordinating Committee, which sets and oversees Centro's policies, procedures, and budget. Our dedication to volunteering means that we are there for our clients, and we are also committed to bringing a new generation into volunteer engagement and leadership.

Join our admin team

Our admin volunteers make Centro run. Admins come to us with a variety of skills and experience, but share a can-do attitude and a passion for cross-cultural learning and sharing. We have volunteers on hand every evening, to greet students and prepare and serve snacks at break. Behind the scenes volunteers run our database, send out notices of events, and track enrollment, attendance and revenue. Volunteers can lend a hand with social media, website management, and marketing, including distributing flyers in neighborhoods to promote our programs.

TIME COMMITMENT: We ask admins to commit at least one night a week, for 3-1/2 hours, over at least one 13-week semester (8 weeks Spring/Summer.)

Teach Spanish

Our Spanish teachers are native speakers and hail from many countries and backgrounds. Some are professional teachers, others work at the UN or other organizations, and others simply want to share their love of Spanish language and culture in a top-quality instructional program. All Spanish classes at Centro are team-taught, with seasoned teachers mentoring newer ones. Native Spanish speakers are also needed to facilitate conversation in our weekly Intercambio and to tutor students approved to take the US citizenship test and interview in Spanish.

TIME COMMITMENT: One night of teaching a week, plus lesson planning, for a 13-week semester (8 weeks Spring/Summer.)

Teach English (ESOL)

Our teachers are CentroNYC's greatest strength, and some have been with us for over a decade. We recruit experienced English/ESL teachers, including those with TESOL certifications, but we also welcome enthusiastic non-teachers with strong language skills. All language classes at Centro are team-taught, with seasoned teachers mentoring newer ones. English teachers work in teams and alternate responsibility for lesson planning and lead teaching.
